베를린 장벽 historiography는 장벽의 건설과 운영, 붕괴 및 기억이 시대별로 어떻게 해석되었는지를 다루는 역사서술이다. 냉전기 공식 서사에서 출발해 1991년 이후 공개된 기록과 구술 자료를 바탕으로 동독·소련의 결정뿐 아니라 서방 정부와 정보기관, 국경 주민의 행위와 책임까지 재검토한다.

냉전기 서방의 서술은 장벽을 동독 체제의 억압을 상징하는 사건으로, 동독 공식 서사는 서방의 침략과 이주 위기에 대한 방어 조치로 제시하는 경향이 있었다. 통일 이후 기록관 자료의 접근이 확대되면서 연구자들은 1961년 8월의 결정 과정, 동독과 소련 지도부의 관계, 서방의 사전 정보와 대응을 함께 분석했다. 이후 연구는 국가 결정만이 아니라 탈출을 시도한 사람들, 국경수비대, 유가족과 지역 주민의 경험 및 기억에도 주목하며 장벽의 역사와 기억 정치를 분리해 살핀다.
