Soviet Guards

제2차 세계대전 중 뛰어난 전과를 거둔 붉은 군대 부대에 부여된 명예 칭호로, 1941년 9월 18일 국방인민위원 명령 제308호로 제도화되었다. 근위 부대는 일반 부대보다 두 배(병사)에서 1.5배(장교)의 급료, 무기·병력 보충에서의 우선권, 별도의 편제표, 그리고 '근위' 계급 접두사와 전용 휘장을 받았으며, 종전 시까지 11개 야전군과 6개 전차군을 포함한 4,500여 개 부대·함정이 이 칭호를 획득했다. 이 명칭은 제정 러시아 근위대와 볼셰비키 적위대의 전통을 동시에 참조한 것으로, 혁명적 적군에서 국가적 군대로의 상징적 전환을 보여준다.
