The vote of 4 August 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War, in which the Social Democratic group in the German Reichstag voted unanimously under party discipline for war credits, and the second vote of 2 December 1914 in which Karl Liebknecht alone voted against.

On 2 August the party's Reichstag leaders decided by four votes to two to support the credits, and on 3 August the parliamentary group voted 78 to 14 to accept them and then imposed party discipline. Hugo Haase and Liebknecht were among the opponents in caucus, but on 4 August the whole group voted in favour. On 2 December Liebknecht became the first Reichstag member to vote against a request for war credits. In his statement he called it a war that none of the peoples involved had desired, an imperialist war for capitalist domination of the world markets. The anti-war minority later formed the Socialist Working Group and in 1917 split off as the Independent Social Democrats.
