Born in Cosmești in Galați County, he was commissioned as a cavalry officer in 1916, fought in the First World War, and served as military attaché in Rome and as an adjutant to King Carol II. He commanded a cavalry regiment on the Eastern Front in 1941–1942 and, as chief of staff of the Capital Military Command, organised the military action in Bucharest during King Michael I’s coup of 23 August 1944. Made brigadier general and under-secretary of the interior, he signed the armistice in Moscow on 12 September and the Paris peace treaty in 1947. Removed from the army after the king’s abdication, he was arrested and degraded in 1949, released and rehabilitated in 1959, and promoted army general in the reserve in 1974.
