From the NK-12 to the NK-33: the chief engine designer who powered Soviet skies and space
After the N-1 moon rocket was cancelled, Kuznetsov defied orders and hid dozens of NK-33 engines in a Samara warehouse. Thirty years later, American engineers tested them and called them the most efficient rocket engines ever built.
Nikolai Kuznetsov was the Soviet General Designer of aircraft and rocket engines who led OKB-276, creating turboprop, turbofan, and liquid-rocket engines that shaped aviation history. His NK-12 remains the most powerful turboprop ever built, powering the Tu-95 strategic bomber and An-22 transport, while the NK-32 became the heart of the Tu-160 supersonic strategic bomber. At Sergei Korolev's request he developed the closed-cycle NK-33 engine for the first stage of the N-1 moon rocket, engines that survived the program's cancellation in storage and were later refurbished for the American Antares rocket in the 1990s. Twice a Hero of Socialist Labor, a Lenin Prize laureate, and a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he also served as a deputy to the RSFSR Supreme Soviet (1963–1990).
