Master of Soviet silent cinema whose Mother told one woman's awakening through montage

Born in Penza, he was taken prisoner by the Germans in the First World War and returned at the end of 1918. Trained in Lev Kuleshov's workshop, he made his name with Mother (1926) and The End of St. Petersburg (1927). He is often contrasted with Eisenstein: the power of the masses against the awakening of individuals. He joined the party in 1939 and won three Stalin Prizes for historical films; in 1946 a party resolution attacked Admiral Nakhimov and he reworked it. He played the holy fool in Ivan the Terrible.
