Reich Youth Leader of the Hitler Youth who, as Gauleiter of Vienna, oversaw the deportation of 65,000 Viennese Jews
Appointed Gauleiter and Reich Governor of Vienna in 1940, he presided over the deportation of 65,000 Viennese Jews to Nazi camps in German-occupied Poland, for which he was convicted of crimes against humanity at Nuremberg.
Born in Berlin to an aristocratic family, he joined the Nazi Party and the SA at eighteen in 1925. He became leader of the National Socialist German Students’ League in 1928 and the party’s Reich Youth Leader in 1931, and from 1933 brought all German youth organisations under the Hitler Youth. He entered the Reichstag in 1932. Appointed Gauleiter and Reich Governor of Vienna in 1940, he had 65,000 Viennese Jews deported to camps in occupied Poland. Convicted of crimes against humanity at Nuremberg, he served twenty years in Spandau until 1966 and died in 1974.
