Tektology

A universal organizational science formulated by Alexander Bogdanov. It sought to unify the social, biological, and physical sciences by treating them as systems of relationships and identifying the organizational principles underlying all systems, set out in the three-volume Tektology: Universal Organization Science (1912–1917). It laid the groundwork for systems thinking decades before Norbert Wiener's cybernetics and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory, but was met with fierce attack from Lenin in Materialism and Empirio-Criticism and remained taboo in Soviet academia for decades.

Origins and Core Concepts
Bogdanov published Tektology in three volumes between 1912 and 1917. The word 'tektology' was first introduced by Ernst Haeckel, but Bogdanov repurposed it entirely, as the universal science of organization.
Tektology's core propositions: (1) Everything that exists (organisms, societies, ideas, physical systems) is an organized complex governed by the same organizational laws. (2) An organized complex is greater than the sum of its parts (non-additive wholeness). (3) Systems exist in dynamic equilibrium; as internal contradictions intensify through interaction with the environment, crises arise, leading either to destruction or reorganization.
Bogdanov identified universal organizational mechanisms: ingression (the mechanism of connection), egression (centralization), and degression (limitation of variety). These strikingly prefigure Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety, cybernetic feedback, and hierarchical systems theory.
The Clash with Lenin
In Materialism and Empirio-Criticism (1909), Lenin denounced Bogdanov's empiriomonism, the philosophical foundation of Tektology, as 'reactionary Machism' and had Bogdanov expelled from the Bolshevik leadership. Tektology consequently remained an academic taboo in the Soviet Union until the 1960s.
Posthumous Rediscovery
From the 1960s onward, Soviet cyberneticians (Povarov, Takhtajan, Uyomov) rediscovered Tektology's pioneering character. Povarov wrote that 'Bogdanov's Tektology anticipated Wiener's cybernetics and Bertalanffy's general systems theory.' Western scholars including George Gorelik, John Biggart, and McKenzie Wark have since established Bogdanov as a foundational figure in systems thinking.
