Tektology: Universal Organizational Science
Bogdanov published Tektology: Universal Organizational Science in three volumes between 1912 and 1917. It was an ambitious attempt to unify the social, biological, and physical sciences by identifying the organizational principles common to all systems.
The core concept is 'dynamic equilibrium.' Every developing system operates between two opposing tendencies: stabilization through integration, and destabilization through internal contradictions. When contradictions overwhelm organizational linkages, a crisis erupts, leading either to transformation or collapse. Bogdanov called these 'systemic contradictions' and held that more harmonious systems possess a higher degree of organization.
In Tektology, Bogdanov offered the first modern formulation of holistic emergent phenomena, systemic development, and self-organization. Ignored in its own time, it was later recognized as anticipating both Norbert Wiener's cybernetics and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory. A German edition appeared in 1928, and scholars have suggested Wiener and Bertalanffy may have encountered it. The Russian mathematician Nikita Moiseev argued Bogdanov's name belongs alongside Mendeleev and Vernadsky.
The Bolshevik mainstream regarded Tektology as a rival to dialectical materialism, one of the reasons Lenin attacked Bogdanov in Materialism and Empiriocriticism. In the 21st century, Tektology has been rediscovered as a precursor to sustainable development theory, complexity science, and Anthropocene discourse.
