In the early hours of 29 August 1949 at the Semipalatinsk test site, Meshik personally removed the guards from the tower housing the assembled first Soviet atomic bomb and was the last man to evacuate the central field. Hours later, the USSR became a nuclear power.
The youngest of Beria's inner circle, Meshik was plucked from a Ukrainian factory into the NKVD in 1932 and rose swiftly through economic and counter-intelligence work. At thirty he became People's Commissar of State Security of Ukraine; during the war he served as deputy head of SMERSH. From 1945, as deputy head of the First Main Directorate, he ran security for the Soviet atomic bomb programme and built the closed-city system. In March 1953 Beria installed him as MVD minister of Ukraine, where he pushed Ukrainization in the western oblasts and clashed with the party leadership. Arrested in Kyiv after Beria's fall, he was tried and shot with him that December.

In his 1964 book Historical Materialism, Chesnokov broke with the Stalinist line: 'Dogmatists and sectarians who extend the dictatorship of the proletariat to the entire period of socialism essentially share Stalin's erroneous thesis on the intensification of class struggle under socialism.'

At the 19th Congress in October 1952 Stalin elevated him to the Presidium (the last philosopher on the party's supreme body) only for him to be removed the day after Stalin's death. After serving as a Gorky regional official and chair of State Radio and Television, he returned to Moscow State University, where in his 1964 book he openly repudiated Stalin's thesis on intensifying class struggle under socialism.

Pyotr Krivonos was a Soviet productivity innovator who expanded the carrying capacity of the railways from the cab of a locomotive. During the 1938 Rodina flight, with fuel running out over the taiga, Raskova's navigator cockpit in the nose was the most dangerous place to be in a crash landing. Ordered by Grizodubova to bail out, she jumped into the Siberian wilderness with nothing but two bars of chocolate — and survived ten days alone before rescue.

Abakumov's deputy interrogator who beat prisoners and fabricated protocols in the Leningrad Affair
After his arrest he testified: 'I went to Leningrad with ten other investigators… Before we left, Abakumov warned me sternly: Zhdanov's name must not be mentioned at the trial. You'll answer with your head.'
A career security officer who joined the NKVD in 1938 and rose to deputy head of the MGB Section for Investigating Specially Important Cases with the rank of colonel. As Abakumov's chief enforcer in the Leningrad Affair, he personally beat prisoners, authorized and directed the falsification of interrogation protocols by his subordinate Arseny Putintsev, and rehearsed defendants before trial to ensure they repeated their false confessions in court. Arrested alongside Abakumov in 1951, he was tried after Stalin's death for fabricating the Leningrad case, sentenced to death, and shot at Levashovo in December 1954; he has never been rehabilitated.

A German applied physicist and rocket guidance specialist. At Peenemünde under Wernher von Braun, he developed the V-2's guidance and control systems; in 1944 the Gestapo arrested him for expressing defeatist views about the war. Forcibly relocated to the USSR in 1946, he led over 170 German specialists on Gorodomlya Island, where his team designed the G-4 (conical single-stage) and G-5 (packet of clustered G-4s). These concepts directly shaped Korolev's R-7 ICBM; in 1949 a Soviet commission rated G-4 superior to the rival R-3. After returning to West Germany in 1953, he left rocketry, invented the smart card, and coined the German term 'Informatik.'
