Chief Marshal of Artillery who created the Strategic Rocket Forces and drove the R-7 that launched Sputnik: killed at his own pad
After the fire subsided, all that remained of the marshal was his melted Gold Star, one shoulder board, and a wristwatch stopped at the moment of the blast.
First Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces (RVSN) and the military sponsor of the R-7 ICBM, which put Sputnik into orbit and gave the USSR its early lead in the space race. An artillery officer who served in Spain, Finland and the Great Patriotic War, he was made Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945. Promoted to Chief Marshal of Artillery in 1959, he built the new RVSN from scratch. On 24 October 1960, during R-16 test preparations at Baikonur, the second-stage engine ignited prematurely and the fully fuelled rocket exploded, killing him: a disaster the Soviet state concealed until perestroika.

The Nedelin Catastrophe: Tragedy and Cover-up at the Launch Pad
On 24 October 1960, at Baikonur's Launch Pad 41, preparations were underway for the test flight of the R-16 ICBM. Nedelin, who had promised Khrushchev a successful launch as a gift for the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, pressed ahead despite a cascade of unresolved technical problems. At 18:45, an electrically driven valve controlling the second-stage engine ignition fired out of sequence. The engine's flame burst through the first-stage fuel tank, turning the fully fuelled rocket into a fireball 120 metres across. Of roughly 250 people around the pad, 74 were killed instantly; 16 more of the 49 injured later died, bringing the death toll to at least 92. Nedelin himself, seated in a chair just 15–20 metres from the rocket, was consumed in the inferno.
The Soviet authorities announced that Nedelin had died in a plane crash and concealed the existence of all other victims. Brezhnev, who personally led the investigation commission, shut down accountability with the remark that 'those who were to be punished have already been punished.' The accident documents remained sealed in the Central Committee's classified archive until the Yeltsin era. The truth emerged only in 1989, when the magazine Ogonyok published 'Site 41' under Gorbachev's perestroika. The Nedelin catastrophe remains the worst ground disaster in the history of the Soviet space and missile programme: a tragedy of systemic secrecy and reckless scheduling.
