1905년 1월 9일(구력), 가폰 신부가 이끄는 노동자와 가족 수만 명이 청원서를 들고 상트페테르부르크 겨울궁전으로 평화 행진을 벌였으나, 제국 근위대가 발포해 수백 명이 사망한 학살 사건이다. 이날의 총성과 함께 '인민의 아버지 차르'라는 신화가 무너졌고, 전국적 파업과 시위가 촉발되어 1905년 혁명의 직접적 도화선이 되었다. 피의 일요일은 러시아 노동계급이 차르 전제에 대한 환상을 버리고 정치적 투쟁으로 전환하는 결정적 계기가 되었다.
