1937년 8월 11일 예조프가 서명한 NKVD 명령 제00485호로 시작된 대숙청 시기 최대 규모의 민족 작전이다. 소련 내 폴란드계 주민과 폴란드 연고가 있는 모든 사람을 '폴란드 군사조직(POW)' 간첩·파괴공작분자로 규정해 '앨범 절차'라는 약식 심사로 대량 처형·수용했으며, 약 13만 9,835명 중 11만 1,091명이 총살되었다. 이는 전체 민족 작전 희생자의 44.9%를 차지하며, 이후 라트비아·핀란드·에스토니아·그리스 등 여타 민족 작전의 모델이 되었다.
