Second Battle of Kharkov
제2차 하리코프 전투
A decisive battle of the Great Patriotic War, fought 12–28 May 1942. Marshal Timoshenko launched a pre-emptive Soviet offensive from the Barvenkovo salient that made early gains, but on 17 May Kleist's First Panzer Army struck the southern flank and closed a pincer with Paulus's Sixth Army, trapping three Soviet field armies. Soviet casualties reached 280,000; the catastrophe tore open the southern front and opened the road for Case Blue, the German drive toward Stalingrad and the Caucasus, launched one month later.
