Able Archer 83
1983년 11월 NATO가 서유럽에서 실시한 핵전쟁 지휘소 훈련. 신규 암호 체계, 무선 침묵, 국가원수급 참여 등 이전보다 현실감이 크게 높아진 이 훈련을 소련군 수뇌부는 실제 핵 선제공격의 위장으로 오판했고, 이에 대응하여 동독과 폴란드의 소련 공군에 핵탄두를 탑재시키는 등 핵전력을 전투태세로 전환했다. 훈련 종료 후 양측은 쿠바 미사일 위기 이후 핵전쟁에 가장 근접했던 순간 중 하나였음을 인식하게 되었고, 이 위기 경험은 이후 미소 군비통제 협상의 중요한 동력이 되었다.
