Freedom of Choice
1988년 12월 7일 미하일 고르바초프가 유엔 총회 연설에서 공식 선언한 외교 원칙으로, 모든 인민은 외부 간섭 없이 자신의 정치·사회 체제를 선택할 권리를 가지며 여기에 예외는 없다는 개념이다. 이는 소련이 동유럽 위성국에 대한 무력 개입을 정당화하던 브레즈네프 독트린을 공식 폐기하는 선언이었으며, 1989년 동유럽 혁명 당시 소련군이 병영에 머물게 한 결정적 교리적 전환이었다. 이 원칙은 신사고의 핵심 구성 요소로서, 이후 시나트라 독트린이라는 별명으로 널리 회자되었다.
