1955년 5월 14일 소련과 동유럽 7개 사회주의 국가가 서독의 NATO 가입에 대응하여 바르샤바에서 체결한 집단방위조약이자 그에 기초한 군사동맹 기구이다. 정식 명칭은 '우호협력상호원조조약'이며, 회원국에 대한 무력 공격 시 즉각적인 집단적 지원을 규정하고 소련 원수 지휘 아래 통합군을 편성했다. NATO에 대응하는 냉전기 양극 체제의 군사적 축이었으나, 1968년 체코슬로바키아 침공처럼 자체 회원국을 향한 무력 개입의 도구로도 사용되었으며, 1989년 동유럽 혁명 이후 회원국들의 탈퇴로 1991년 7월 1일 공식 해체되었다.
