레닌이 『제국주의론』(1916)에서 정식화한 개념으로, 독점자본이 식민지 재분할, 원료 공급원, 자본 수출 시장을 두고 벌이는 약탈적 전쟁을 의미한다. 민족 해방이나 봉건 타도를 위한 '진정한 민족 전쟁'과 구별되며, 제국주의 전쟁에서는 '조국 방어'라는 구호가 인민을 기만하는 수사에 불과하다고 보았다. 레닌은 제1차 세계대전을 이러한 제국주의 전쟁의 전형으로 분석하고, '제국주의 전쟁을 내전으로' 전환하라는 구호를 제기했다.
